The Thoroughbred is one of my favourite horse breeds. The Thoroughbred is an amazing and intelligent breed, beyond the track they can excel in many disciplines. Thoroughbreds are both loyal and trustworthy and make amazing horses.
History
Thoroughbreds were created in the 17th and 18th century in England, when native mares were crossbred with imported stallions of Arabian, Barb and Turkoman. Three key stallions Byerley Turk, Darley Arabian and Godolphin Arabian are considered the foundation sires. The breed was developed to focus on creating a horse with speed and stamina. Then throughout the 18th and 19th centuries Thoroughbreds were exported worldwide.
Height
15.2 to 17.0 hands
Colours
Thoroughbreds come in various coat colours bay, dark bay, chestnut, black or grey. The face and lower legs may be marked with white, but white will generally not appear on the body. Coat patterns that have more than one colour on the body are not recognised by mainstream breed registries.
Characteristics
Their intelligence is not only evident in their ability to perform tasks but they are also very social and enjoy interacting with other animals, Thoroughbreds are also very intuitive and sensitive to human emotions.
Thoroughbreds are a hot blooded breed and are known for their spirited and energetic nature, Thoroughbreds are often high strung and require careful training and handling. Thoroughbreds can reach speeds of around 40mph, with their lean bodies, long legs and a deep chest. Their hind quarters are particularly muscled which allows for powerful strides. Even through they are powerful muscular horses they are able to move with grace and agility.
Care and Management
Their large hearts and efficient cardiovascular system enable Thoroughbreds to deliver oxygen to their muscles more efficiently enhancing their performance. Regular workouts and conditioning are essential to keep Thoroughbreds in peak physical condition.Thoroughbreds are highly energetic and do best with regular exercise and turn out and try to keep your Thoroughbred turned out on a pasture to meet his/ her needs for forage. Thoroughbreds are generally considered hard keepers as this breed has difficulty maintaining weight, due to them having a more active metabolism than other breeds. To fuel their high energy levels they need a balanced diet rich in nutrients including high quality forage and specially formulated feeds.
If you bring home an off the track Thoroughbred (OTTB) remember that it’s new life will be significantly different to life on the track, small gradual transitions are recommended to limit stress. OTTB’s usually need significant retraining before they are ready to start their new careers.
Just like all breeds Thoroughbreds require regular grooming, hoof care and veterinary check ups are essential to maintain the health and well-being of Thoroughbreds. However Thoroughbreds are also known for being sensitive so use soft grooming brushes and be gentle.
Summary
While Thoroughbreds can be hot blooded and slightly temperamental with the right training and guidance they make amazing horses. They can become your best friend, your soul mate, your partner and they will be 100% loyal to you, they are trust worthy and they are an amazing intelligent breed.
